Abstract
Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the ovaries, and is often called the "silent killer" because symptoms do not typically appear until the cancer has advanced to a late stage. The study aims at evaluating the incidence and mortality rate of ovarian cancer, and the impact of current drug treatment on patient outcomes in Port Harcourt municipality. This is a retrospective cohort study involving the collection and assessing of medical records of ovarian cancer patients information. The period of data collection for this study was from 2017-2023. We collated 22 ovarian cancer cases that were reported in the hospital within the year 2017-2023. Ethical approval was gotten from Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. All patients’ data were reviewed and collected into a data pro forma. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 26. Descriptive statistics was used, and categorical variables were compared by Pearson’s correlation tests. From the data collected, there was an improvement in ovarian cancer records in Rivers State University Teaching Hospital as 22 cases were reported from 2017 till 2022. From the cases reported ovarian cancer is not exclusive to older women as women in their 30’s (18.2%) were also recorded with ovarian cancer cases. A patient who received the complete course of chemotherapy and also carried out exploratory hysterectomy (surgery) went into remission. This study has provided valuable insights into the incidence, mortality rate, early detection, current drug treatments, and management of the disease within Rivers State Teaching Hospital (RSUTH).
