Abstract
Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer and leading cause of cancer-related death among women worldwide BSE is a quick, simple, non-invasive, and free technique for women to inspect their own breasts to see if anything has changed. The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practice of breast self-examination among female students in Pamo University of Medical Sciences. A descriptive cross-sectional study was adopted and carried out on female students from different departments in the school, on random selection and only those eligible were part of the study. The population for this study included 260 female students within the ages of 18-25 from the randomly selected departments in PAMO University of Medical Sciences (PUMS). The data collected from the field was analysed. A descriptive analysis was done using the statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The result obtained from this study, revealed that majority of the participants 252 (96.9%) responded that they had knowledge of breast cancer. There was a high level of awareness about Breast Self- Examination among the participant, 252(96.9) of the participants agreed to be aware of breast self-examination. All the participants 260(100%) agreed that females should practice BSE. The respondents agreed that BSE should be practiced among adolescent females, with a mean of (3.05) and a standard deviation of (1.06). There was a statistical significance at criterion mean (2.5). Result revealed that the participants agreed that breast lump can be felt during palpation with a mean of (2.74) and standard deviation of (1.41). There was a significant effect because the total mean is above the criterion mean of 2.5. The result further showed that the respondents agreed that females should seek medical attention if breast lump is felt which indicates a positive attitude to breast self-examination. There was a significant effect because the total mean is above the criterion mean of 2.5. This study therefore revealed that most participants have heard of breast cancer as a disease; however, adequate knowledge and understanding of the disease is still lacking. Furthermore, the awareness, knowledge and practice of BSE and other methods of early detection of breast cancer among undergraduate female students and indeed the public should not be relegated to the background. Relying on findings from this study, it is therefore recommended that more awareness campaigns about BSE should be carried out and directed to the public by health organizations. On the other hand, health workers should also intensify health education on BSE, this will help to capture those who are not within the school setting.
