Abstract
ABO blood groups have been pre-recognized as risk factor for bleeding and clotting disorders. This study aimed at determining some Haemostatic Parameters (Platelet count(PC), Prothrombin time(PT)& Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time(APTT)) of ABO blood groups. The study was carried out among Students of PAMO University of Medical Sciences, Port-Harcourt.The study wasa cross-sectional study design.A total of 85 subjects were recruited for the study. The tube method was used for the ABO cell and Serum grouping, the manual method was used for the estimation of PTand APTT and automated method was used to obtain the PC. The data generated were analyzed statistically using ANOVA at 95% confidence interval and p≤0.05. The frequency distribution for ABO blood group, PC PT & APTT is as follows; for ABO, 56(65.90%), 19(22.40%), 10(11.80%), 0(0.00%) for blood groups O, A, B and AB respectively; for platelet count, 9(10.60%), 75.(88.20%), and 1.(1.20%) subjects had reduced, normal, increased platelet count respectively; for PT, 31.(35.50%), 36(42.40%), 18(21.20%) subjects had reduced, normal and prolonged PT respectively; for APTT, 56(65.90%), 18.(21.20%) &11.(12.90%) shortened, normal and prolonged APTT respectively. The mean ± standard deviation for PC, across the ABO blood groups were A(1.95±0.22), B(1.90±0.31) & O(1.89±0.36); for PT, B(2.10±0.57), O(1.84±0.78)& A(1.74±0.73), for APTT O(1.50±0.71), B (1.50±0.85) & A (1.36±0.68) showing statistically insignificant difference with p-value >0.05. Although there was no statistically significant difference in the parameters assayed, individual results can aid personalized medicine to prevent bleeding or clotting tendencies.
